ANWETECH successfully completed a flame detection system project for a gas station in Rwanda. The project used 8 units of AT-FD02-UVIR3 UV/IR flame detectors to improve fire detection performance in fuel-related areas, including fuel dispensing areas, key operational zones, and warehouse or storage sections.
Gas stations are high-risk fire environments where flammable fuel vapor, vehicle movement, electrical equipment, fuel dispensing activity, and storage areas may create potential ignition sources. Once ignition occurs, fuel-related fire can develop very quickly. Therefore, the fire detection system must provide fast flame recognition and reliable alarm response.
For this project, the ANWETECH AT-FD02-UVIR3 UV/IR Flame Detector was selected to provide fast and reliable flame detection for both open and enclosed areas within the gas station.

Gas stations are different from ordinary building environments. Fire risks are concentrated around fuel dispensing points, vehicle operating areas, storage sections, and electrical or control equipment. In these areas, fire may start from fuel vapor ignition, static electricity, electrical sparks, hot surfaces, or improper operation.
In open or semi-open fuel station environments, conventional smoke detectors may be affected by airflow and ventilation. Heat detectors usually respond after the temperature has already increased. For fuel-related fire risks, flame detection is more suitable because it detects flame radiation directly.
This is why UV/IR flame detection is an effective solution for gas station fire protection. It helps identify open flame hazards quickly, especially in areas where fast fire development is possible.
The AT-FD02-UVIR3 is a point-type UV/IR combined flame detector designed for fast and reliable detection of open flames. It uses an infrared sensor and a solar-blind ultraviolet sensor with internal signal processing to improve flame detection performance and reduce unwanted alarms in industrial environments.
For this Rwanda gas station project, the detector was selected because it provides:

The 8 AT-FD02-UVIR3 flame detectors were installed at key locations across the gas station to improve flame monitoring coverage. The deployment focused on areas where fuel vapor, flammable materials, equipment operation, and daily vehicle activity may increase fire risk.
The main protected areas include:
| Protected Area | Fire Safety Purpose |
|---|---|
| Fuel Dispensing Areas | Detect flame risks near fuel filling points and vehicle operating areas |
| Key Operational Zones | Monitor areas with equipment, staff activity, and fuel-related operation |
| Warehouse / Storage Sections | Improve fire detection for stored materials and enclosed risk points |
During project design, detector positions should be selected according to flame risk points, line-of-sight coverage, possible obstructions, installation height, viewing angle, and environmental exposure. The 120° field of view allows the detector to monitor a wide area when installed at the correct position and angle.
The AT-FD02-UVIR3 supports wall-mounted or ceiling-mounted installation. During installation, the detector aiming angle should be adjusted according to the protected area and the required field of view.
For this type of gas station project, the commissioning process should include:
| Commissioning Item | Purpose |
|---|---|
| Installation Position Check | Confirm that each detector has a clear line of sight to the protected risk area |
| Aiming Angle Adjustment | Ensure the detector is directed toward the correct fuel-risk zone |
| Wiring and Power Supply Check | Verify 24VDC power input and stable wiring condition |
| Alarm Relay Test | Confirm fire alarm signal output to the connected system |
| Fault Relay Test | Confirm fault supervision function |
| 4–20mA Signal Verification | Check current loop output if used by the project system |
| Protected Area Review | Confirm fuel dispensing, operational, and storage areas are effectively covered |
This process helps ensure that flame alarm signals can be transmitted correctly to the connected fire alarm control system or site safety control system.
By using AT-FD02-UVIR3 flame detectors, the Rwanda gas station improved fire detection capability in high-risk fuel-related areas. The system helps support faster alarm response and better fire safety management for daily gas station operation.
