Why Fire Pump Rooms Need Water Leak Detection
Fire pump rooms are critical utility areas in commercial buildings, industrial plants, high-rise buildings, warehouses and infrastructure projects. They contain fire pumps, water pipelines, valves, flanges, pressure gauges, drainage channels and electrical control panels. Although the fire pump system may stay in standby condition for long periods, the water piping network inside the pump room can still face leakage risks.
A water leak in a fire pump room is not always a sudden pipe burst. In many real projects, leakage starts from small and hidden points, such as valve dripping, flange gasket seepage, pipe joint leakage, pressure gauge connection leakage, pump seal leakage or water accumulation near the pump base. These small leaks may not immediately trigger a pressure alarm, but they can gradually create floor flooding, corrosion, moisture problems and maintenance risk.
This is why water leak detection is useful for fire pump room protection. A sensing cable leak detection system can monitor the floor and high-risk leakage points continuously. Valve stems and valve bodies may show slow seepage after long-term use. Pressure gauge connections and small branch pipes may drip after maintenance or pressure changes. Drainage trenches, low-point areas and floor corners may collect water when leakage is not removed quickly.
These locations are suitable for sensing cable layout because they are predictable risk points. Instead of waiting for water to spread across the whole floor, sensing cable can be placed near the areas where leakage is most likely to appear.
Fire protection systems may already include pressure switches, flow switches and fire pump controllers. However, these devices are designed for system operation and fire protection control logic. They are not mainly designed to detect local floor leakage in the pump room.
A small valve drip, pipe joint seepage or pressure gauge connection leak may not create an immediate pressure drop large enough to activate a system alarm. However, the leaked water can still damage the pump room environment over time. This is the difference between system pressure monitoring and local water leak detection.
A leak detection sensing cable adds another layer of monitoring. It detects the actual presence of water on the floor or around equipment. This makes it a useful supporting solution for pump rooms, especially where early maintenance response is important.

For larger loads or higher voltage devices, an interposing relay should be used. The AT-LD101 relay output should not directly control high-current or high-voltage equipment.
The module also supports RS-485 communication with MODBUS-RTU protocol. This allows the leak status, fault condition and leak location data to be connected to BMS, PLC or remote monitoring systems. For modern building management, this is useful because pump room leakage can be displayed or recorded at the monitoring center instead of relying only on manual inspection.
Good sensing cable layout is important for reliable leak detection. In a fire pump room, the cable can be installed around the following areas:
Around the base of the main fire pump and standby fire pump.
Near the jockey pump and pressure maintenance system.
Below valve groups, flanges and pipe connections.
Near pressure gauge and small branch pipe connections.
Along drainage trenches, floor low points and water collection areas.
In front of electrical control panels where water should not spread.
Along pipe routes where leakage may drip onto the floor.
The AT-LD101 module itself is not waterproof and should be installed indoors in a cabinet or suitable enclosure. The sensing cable should be installed away from high-temperature sources, sharp objects, strong magnetic fields and areas that may damage the cable jacket.
